My Background

T.F. Straight has authored two books, "The Stories My Foremothers Told Me : Conversations with women of color who witnessed the Civil Rights Movement in the Deep South,” and "All You Could See Was the Water: Hurricane Katrina through The Eyes of Children.”

Ms. Straight’s work with young Katrina victims prompted the University of Virginia to invite her to speak at their inaugural symposium on race and society: In Katrina’s Wake: Racial Implications of the New Orleans Disaster.

She has also been the keynote speaker at several other colleges and universities in honor of Women's History month and Black History month. Ms. Straight has been featured in Women's Digest, the Florida Times-Union, and Mississippi Press among other places. She has been interviewed on numerous television programs as well as National Public Radio. Ms. Straight also worked with NPR's StoryCorps, as part of their Griot Storytelling Initiative. Some of her interviews for this oral history project are archived in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

In addition to writing books, T.F. Straight is an editor, transcriptionist, and English teacher. She has transcribed and edited several books including “Creating A University: UNF Oral History,” by Dr. James Crooks, and “Fiction Fix," a literary magazine (Editor in Chief). Ms. Straight also has extensive experience in audio and video transcription, including time coding and speaker identification. She is certified to teach English grammar and literature, and provides tutoring and writing instruction to all grade levels and adults.
